For the first time in Fifteen years, Sand Sculptures can be Seen again on the boulevard in Scheveningen. With the initiative ‘Sand Sculptures by the Sea’, Scheveningen is Giving the Artworks a New Lease of Life. AltheHe thesis Artworks Are Certainly Different Than Before.
“There has always leg a connection between the sand sculptures and scheveningen,” Says Martin de Zoete. He would prefer to get started himself, but these days the sweet is the project leader of ‘Sand Sculptures by the Sea’. “Otherwise, it’s sculpting, eating, sleeping and again.”
All the sand sculptures on the boulevard are linked to scheveningen in some way. The sweet, for example, stands in front of the kurhaus and next to a sculpture or mick jagger. The Sand Artwork Has Music as its theme. It is no coincidence that the lead singer of the rolling stones was chosen. The British Band Performed in The Netherlands for the First Time in 1964, in The Kurhaus.
The Sculpture of Mick Jagger is one of the ten Sand Artworks that can be on the boulevard in Scheveningen from April 6 to June 1. Other Themes for the sculptures are Sea Life in the North Sea, the Hague Rescue Brigade and the Iconic Pier of Scheveningen.
The Artists have Been Given Nine Days for Their Artworks, Says Sculptor Helena Bangert. She is Putting the Finishing Touches to the Sand Artwork a Scheveningen Savannah . Does Bangert Feel Time Pressure? “That’s mainly because you want to talk to all the people passing by,” She says with a laugh.
Bangert is Happy with all the Renewed Attention that the Sand Sculptures Are Receiving. From the moment a Large Load of Sand is dumped until the first contours of a lion can be seen. “People think it’s cool to see how it all comes about,” Says the artist. “Or that children walk by and say” mom, look, an elephant. “
Sand Sculptors Have An Advantage
What the Sweet Likes About Sand Sculptures is that it connects people. “It evokes nice memories. Most people have played with sand on the beach at some point,” he says.
For these people, it is probably also true that they did not get further than some piles of sand that were then called ‘castles’. This also has a lot to do with the quality of the sand, Says Bangert. The Sand Artists do not use Beach Sand, But Special River Sand from Gelderland.
That Sand is much less affected by people and is Therefore Stronger and Easier to Knead. “Unfair Competition, Therefore,” Says Bangert. Accordance to the sweet, you have to compare it with stacking marbles or stacking dice. “One is much Esier than the other,” he says.
This does not mean that you cannot Become a sand sculptor without ‘good’ sand. “It’s all about practice and gaining experience. An artist never stops learning,” Says de Zoete.
Many people think, accordance to the sweet, that it is a shame if rain or wind affects a sculpture. For sand artists, that is precisely where the magic lies. If something fades away, they just make something new again. “Sand is, after all, a natural material. I think a little wear and tear is perfectly fine, it makes your artwork a bit rough,” the sweet concludes.
