Luke Littler was impressed by his opponent Gian van Veen in the first round of the World Grand Prix on Tuesday evening. The Dutchman made history with the highest tournament average ever, but did not win against Littler.

The 23-year-old Van Veen reached an average of 106.47 points with three darts. That is just slightly higher than the Englishman Alan Warriner in 2001 against compatriot Andy Jenkins. Warriner recorded an average of 106.45 points per three darts at the time.

Littler himself recorded an average of 105.58 points per three darts. “It’s a shame I didn’t get that record, but we definitely bring out the best in each other,” said the eighteen-year-old Littler afterwards on the stage. “Gian played a brilliant match.”

“We players always play our best darts against each other,” continued the reigning world champion. “I am very happy that I ultimately pulled this match across the line. Gian was good, but in the second set I was simply better.”

‘Wouldn’t be surprised if Gian wins a major’

At Dartsnieuws.com , Littler then elaborated on Van Veen’s special performance. “His performances are great. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gian wins a major soon.”

“At the moment there is mainly attention for me and Luke Humphries, but Gian should also get that attention. If he continues like this and comes far in the upcoming tournaments, he might deserve a place in the Premier League.”

The British commentators from Sky Sports were also impressed by the match between Littler and Van Veen. “This is one of the best performances ever in the World Grand Prix,” it sounded during the match.
