Four people died on Tuesday when a building collapsed in the center of the Spanish capital, Madrid. The building was being renovated when the floor of the top floor collapsed.
It quickly became clear that four people were missing after the building near the Ópera metro station collapsed around 1:00 PM. It took hours before the rescue operation could begin, because the facade first had to be stabilized.
It wasn’t until late Tuesday evening that all four bodies were recovered from the rubble. They are three construction workers and an office worker from the renovation project, reports the Spanish medium El País .
Another three construction workers were injured. One of them was taken to the hospital with a broken leg. The others sustained minor injuries.
In total, about forty people were working when the building, which is to be converted into a luxury hotel, collapsed. It is still unclear how that could have happened.
