Gaite Jansen releases debut novel about obsession and manipulation

Actress Gaite Jansen will release her debut novel on Tuesday. The book The body was innocent from a film script that gradually grew into a complete story, says Jansen in an interview with the ANP .

The novel follows a Dutch dancer who ends up in New York at a reputable dance company. There she falls under the spell of a famous American choreographer who is twenty years older. “I actually wanted to write a film script, because it seems very cool to direct a long film and to write. The basis was very strong, but the script himself not,” says the 33-year-old actress, known for roles in the Dutch Hoop and I know who you are . She also played a role in the British series Peaky Blinders.

Publisher Elco Lenstra van Hollands Diep, who previously published a collection of poems by Jansen, encouraged her to continue writing the story as a novel. “In it I was better able to deepen the characters. In a book you can read someone’s thoughts, so this felt like a liberation,” says Jansen.

The actress notices that her experience with poetry helped in the writing process. “It was a lot of step. Posting is another branch of sport, but the ingenuity of language came back in writing.”

Own fascination as inspiration

Jansen, who lived in New York for a while, was led by her own fascinations for the story. “I have a fascination for manipulation and obsession. It’s about something I would like to read myself,” she says. While writing, she sometimes got into “a kind of meditative state of his” in which the book “Almost wrote itself.” Yet Jansen sometimes found it difficult that writing is a lonely process. “I wasn’t used to that,” said the actress.

According to Jansen, writing tastes like more. She calls it “a super fun outing” next to her acting work and does not exclude that there will be another book. She would also find a film adaptation of her debut “crazy” – although she does not want to play in it herself. “I would rather direct it.”
