First contamination of bird flu since March established at Drents Poultry farm

Bird flu has been established on a poultry farm in Gasselternijveenschemond in Drenthe, near Stadskanaal. The 71,000 animals on the site are cleared, reports the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) on Tuesday. It is the first infection in the Netherlands since March.

The company with the contamination keeps broiler parents: chickens that lay eggs from which broilers come. In a radius of ten kilometers around the company, a transport ban immediately applies for 31 other commercial poultry farms.

In addition, there applies to poultry and other bird species in the area. These measures must prevent spread to other parts of the country.

At the moment there is no national withdrawal and shielding obligation in the Netherlands, because according to the NVWA there is no immediate reason for this. Experts from the authority will meet soon to re -assess the risk of further spread of bird flu.
