The hundreds of pigs found dead on Saturday in a stable in Ospel, Limburg, were killed by an increased value hydrogen sulfide, the safety region reports. That is a toxic gas that can be released from manure wells.
“The source for the increase is not yet outdated,” a spokesperson for Security Region told Anp news agency. Possibly it has to do with a malfunctioning fan, the safety region stated earlier.
Employees had discovered the dead pigs in the stable. The staff is unharmed.
2,400 pigs would be in the stable. It is not known how much of this is still alive.
