Women with very dense breast tissue must be eligible for an MRI scan in the population screening for breast cancer, RIVM advises the Ministry of Health. Outgoing State Secretary Judith Tielen (prevention) wants to “realize” the scans as quickly as possible.
An MRI scan is financially feasible “if carefully organized”, the RIVM concludes in an advice that the ministry had asked for. It is important that “enough staff and equipment remain available for other medical studies that MRI is needed”.
The MRI scan in the population screening for breast cancer is intended for a small proportion of women between 50 and 75 years old. All women receive an invitation every two years for an investigation with a mammography. That is an X -ray in which the breasts are squeezed between two plates.
But in 5 to 8 percent of women, any tumors can be seen worse due to very dense tissue. An MRI study gives them better opportunities to find tumors early. The scans to breast cancer must be done in hospitals and independent treatment centers.
State Secretary Tielen wants the scans to come as quickly as possible. She wants to share more information about it by the beginning of November. Earlier, all parties in the Lower House voted for a motion that called for MRI scans for women with dense breast tissue possible.
The RIVM expects that the import of the MRI scans will last four to five years. The breast cancer association believes that this is unacceptable and believes that the minister should opt for a faster variant, the organization reports in a response.
