For the first time in a year more than 2,100 asylum seekers in Ter Apel

COA reception organization is increasingly difficult to find new reception places for asylum seekers and make room in the registration center in Ter Apel. For the first time since October last year, more than 2,100 people are staying in the registration center.

In the night from Monday to Tuesday there were 2,120 asylum seekers in Ter Apel. For the fourteenth time this month, that number is greater than 2,000. That is the maximum that has applies since a judge in November 2024.

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) must spend the night in Ter Apel for each night that more asylum seekers in Ter Apel have to pay a penalty of 50,000 euros, with a maximum of 5 million euros. The total amount is now 700,000 euros.

In the spring of 2024, the registration center in Ter Apel also had to pay penalty payments, which were lower per night than is currently the case. The COA then transferred a total of 1.5 million euros to the municipality of Westerwolde, of which Ter Apel is part.

The number of asylum seekers has slowly risen to the border of two thousand in recent months. At the beginning of September, that limit was passed for the first time since the end of 2024.

Other reception places are not yet available

Because some temporary reception locations are closed, the COA can place too few asylum seekers from the registration center to other reception places. A major shelter in Biddinghuizen will probably only open next month. And in Leiden there will be an emergency shelter in a vacant church, but it is also not yet available.

Moreover, there are too many recognized refugees in asylum seekers’ centers. Because of the housing shortage they cannot move to their own home.
