Higher road tax does not yet shy away from camper lover

Higher road tax does not yet shy away from camper lover

As of the new year, the road tax on camper cars doubles. That is a bit of a swallow for camper owners who are used to the so -called quarter rate. In any case, it is not yet scared of buyers.

“If the full rate were to apply to such a heavy vehicle that is often also a diesel, then it would no longer be fun,” says a spokesperson for branch organizations BOVAG and camping and caravan industry (KCI). Road tax is paid for weight and emissions.

Because a camper car is used less often than a passenger car and therefore often abroad, a lower rate for the road tax has traditionally been applied than for passenger cars. “The current regulation is there to compensate owners for this,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance.

The Tax Plan 2024 states that the rate is now increasing. “The state misses a lot of tax revenues, while there is no control over use,” Finance explains the decision. “Moreover, you don’t pay if you don’t use the camper, because then you can have it suspended.”

The sector therefore says that owners must now be more alert to this. When you place the camper, you can suspend the payment of the road tax and let it go again when you get the camper out of the stable again.

Too limited financial incentive for sustainability

According to Finance, the current quarterly rate is also a limited financial incentive to look at a more sustainable way of transport. “While campers in comparison with normal passenger cars cause relatively more CO2, nitrogen, and particulate matter emissions.”

The increase in any case is not yet scared of new buyers, according to the sales figures for this year that the sector announces in the run -up to the sixtieth camping and Caravan Jaarbeurs. More than 2,550 new motorhomes were sold until mid -September. “There were 2,465 in the whole of 2024.”

This year it is expected that the sale will cross the border of three thousand new camper cars. Caravans also remain in demand. Road tax does not have to be paid on this. “That is seen as a trailer,” the spokesperson for the BOVAG and KCI knows.

As of 1 September, 633,802 campers and caravans were registered in the Netherlands. “There are almost twelve thousand more than a year earlier.”

As of the New Year, Road Tax on Motorhomes Will Double. This is a setback for motorhome owners who are used to the so-called quarter rate. In any case, it does not scare off buyers yet.

“If the full rate were to apply to such a heavy vehicle that is also a diesel, it would no longer be fun,” Says a spokesperson for industry organizations bovag and camping and caravan industry (KCI). Road Tax is paid accordance to weight and emissions.

Because a motorhome is used less of than a passenger car and often abroad, a lower rate for road tax has traditionally applied than for passenger cars. “The Current Scheme is to compensate owners for this,” Says a Spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance.

The 2024 Tax Plan Includes An Increase in the Rate. “The State is Losing a Lot of Tax Revenue, While There is No Control on its use,” Finance Explains the Decision. “Moreover, you don’t pay if you don’t use the motorhome, because you can have it suspended.”

The sector Therefore says that owners should be more to this in the future. When you store the motorhome, you can suspend the payment of road tax and have it take effect again when you take the motorhome out of storage.

Too Limited Financial Incentive for Sustainability

Accordance to finance, the current Quarter Rate also provides too limited a financial incentive to look at a more sustainable fashion or transport. “While Motorhomes Cause Relatively More CO2, Nitrogen and Particulate Matter Emissions Compared to Normal Passenger Cars.”

The increase does not scare off new buyers, as shown by the sales figures for this year that the sector is announcing in the run-up to the sixtieth camping and caravan trade fair. By mid-September, More than 2,550 New Motorhomes had Been Sold. “That was 2,465 in All of 2024.”

Sales Are Expected to Exceed the 3000 New Motorhomes Mark This Year. Caravans also Remain Popular. Incidentally, no road tax has to be paid on these. “That is SEEN AS A TRAILER,” Says the Spokesperson for the Bovag and KCI.

As of September 1, 633,802 Motorhomes and Caravans were registered in The Netherlands. “That’s Almost Twelve Thousand More Than a Year Earlier.”
