In his speech for the General Assembly in New York, outgoing Prime Minister Dick Schoof has underlined the importance of the United Nations. He did that after US President Donald Trump had previously been critical of the organization in his speech.
Trump opened the United Nations openly in his speech on Tuesday, in which he said that with “hollow words you will not solve wars.” The US president has been critical of the Platform for International Dialogue for some time and regularly threatened to reverse the financing from Washington.
“It is said that the UN can no longer justify its existence,” said Schoof in his speech on Thursday (local time). “Whoever claims that, however, forget where we come from.” The UN was established shortly after the Second World War to facilitate international peace and stability in the world.
“For the past eighty years we have taken the performance of the UN for granted. We have failed to look back at where we come from and to all the milestones we have reached on the way,” said Schoof.
Nevertheless, the prime minister believes that the organization should change and reform. One of the major criticisms of the UN is the Veto Recht of the five permanent members of the Security Council, which are a lot more powerful than other countries. As a result, the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and France can block resolutions with a simple veto, which hinders the decisiveness of the UN.
That turned out once again when Russia neighboring Ukraine invaded more than three years ago. A conviction of that invasion was prevented by Veto’s from Russia. The UN therefore does not play a significant role in attempts to put an end to the conflict.
Also referred to the war in Gaza. According to him, the Israeli government must change its course there. “The annexation of the West Bank and Gaza City is unacceptable and we condemn every step in this direction,” said the partyless Prime Minister. Also in this conflict the role of the UN is minimal, because the US is behind Israel.
Partly due to the attitude of Trump, the UN is under pressure on its 80th birthday. The influence of the organization has decreased and more and more countries are opposed to the idea of multilateralism, with countries working together at an international level. Yet experts do not find the organization outdated.
