For the first time in more than half a century, a Syrian leader spoke during the General Assembly of the United Nations. Interim president and former Al Qaida member Ahmed Al Sharaa called on the sanctions against his country.
Interim president Al Sharaa stated at the UN that his country is sailing a new course and wants to guarantee the rights of everyone. He said that large international companies are coming to Syria and insisted on withdrawing all sanctions against his country.
The last time a Syrian leader spoke to the UN was Nureddin Al-Atassi in 1967. He was later dropped off by Hafez Al Assad, the father of the later dictator Bashar Al Assad. “Syria is now demanding its rightful place in the international community,” said Al Sharaa.
Flight countrymen from the former jihadist leader are now returning en masse to their home country. UN refugee organization UNHCR reports that it is one million people since the fall of the Al Assad regime at the end of 2024.
