Actor Khalid Alterch can be seen in his own spin-off now that his character Tonnano from the popular Mocro Mafia series has grown into a public favorite. “I never thought this would be my life,” the born Rotterdammer told NU.nl.
An acting career was not in line with Alterch anyway. Years ago he went with a friend to a writer’s camp, where he bumped into Mocro Mafia -Medker Achmed Akkabi. “Various musicians were asked to cooperate in the music for the first season of the series. I started talking to Achmed, whom I knew from TV,” says the Alterch. “After I broke through as a rapper, I was approached for a roll in the second season.” He initially signed for two scenes. That became six.
Before the Alterch broke through with his role in Mocro Mafia , he was known to his fans as rapper Ice. “I think I was about twelve years old when I started raping. Around the age of sixteen I made my first video clip.”
A few years later youtube made one of his songs offline due to an infringement of copyright, Alterch became demotivated. “I had used the instrumental part of another song. I thought that was possible, because I didn’t make money with my music. I felt it was not possible to get my career going.”
Just when he wanted to give up his musical career, he scored a hit with Pistola in 2018 with rapper Murda. Then songs like Miyek followed, I hear you , these life and floors . Yet Alterch has put music on a lower level. “You really have to take the time to make new music. As soon as it feels like an assignment or contractual duty, there is no good music from that.” Nevertheless, he does not exclude new music. “Making music is a bit therapeutic.”
As a child, Alterch did not only dream of a career in music. He also wanted to shine on the silver screen. He regularly came to the video store for films from actors such as Robert de Niro, Denzel Washington, Al Pacino and Morgan Freeman. When Mocro Mafia came his way, he didn’t have to think long about it.
And that the job would lead to its own spin-off one day, Alterch never expected. “I mainly saw it as an opportunity to promote my music and assumed that it would stay with a small supporting role.”
But Alterch’s character Tonnano grew into one of the most popular faces in Mocro Mafia . He is proud of it, certainly because he has largely been responsible for the interpretation of the character. “The makers gave me the space and the confidence to let go of my vision of Tonnano,” he says. “I like to see what development the character has gone through. Although he makes the same mistakes a little too often.”
Just like some of the actors from Mocro Mafia, Alterch did not attend the theater school. He doesn’t see that as a disadvantage. “I found it refreshing to see how that turned out,” he says about the choice of makers to offer inexperienced actors a chance. “Moreover, they were looking for a Rotterdammer with a smooth chat. Nobody has to teach me that.”
Alterch made an impression with that smooth chat. After Mocro Mafia , which ended last year after six seasons, the actor received various offers. He rejected most roles because he said he was “not enough input”. He did get that space for his role in the new comedy series Nordin , which can be seen at Amazon Prime from October 30.
And there is more in Alterch’s agenda: he is currently on stage with his first solo performance. The actor and rapper promises a lot of humor and personal stories. “In an interactive show I let go more about myself for the first time, but I like to keep it positive. So are you shiny? Then stay at home.”
