
NVWA supervisor seized 498 birds in a business premises in Noord-Brabant on Friday. A twenty -year -old man was arrested on Monday morning on suspicion of illegal trade in birds.
During a search of the building, inspectors of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) found hundreds of birds. Presumably the animals in Africa and Asia were caught in the wild and then smuggled to the European Union, the NVWA writes.
It concerns different bird species, reports Omroep Brabant . Cockatoos, rhino birds and gold -cap fisheries would have been seized. It is still being investigated whether these birds have been introduced legally. The animals are housed by expert reception addresses. It is not known where the birds were held and from which North Brabant site the suspect comes.
The man went wrong in the same way earlier. In 2024, 170 birds were seized by the trader. Research then showed that the animals came from abroad, but the man could not show accompanying documents. Subsequently, inspectors and detectives from the NVWA started a criminal investigation.
It is forbidden to introduce birds from outside the EU, partly because of the risk of diseases such as bird flu.
