In the Netherlands there are now thirteen areas where wolves have a territory. Wolven pairs have settled in two areas in Drenthe who have already had young this spring.
Drenthe now has four territories. In the Veluwe with seven territories, most wolves still live, reports Bij12 Monday. Bij12 is the organization that handles Nature Affairs on behalf of the twelve provinces.
In southern Drenthe (municipality of Westerveld), two wolves were recorded on a wild camera at the same time at the end of February and mid-April. The images showed that a male wolf ran behind a female wolf. At the beginning of July, three cubs were also recorded.
A new pack has also established itself in West Drenthe (Municipality of Midden-Drenthe). In June a wolf, Wolvin and five cubs could be seen on images of a wild camera. Wolven Leef Regions were already in the middle of Drenthe and in the Drents-Friese Wold. This year’s cubs were born in both packs.
In addition to the seven packs in the Veluwe, a pack also lives in the Gelderse Vallei. Furthermore, a wolf couple with cubs also live on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. That is the pack of which problem wolf GW3237M (popularly known as Wolf Bram) is the father. The province of Utrecht has been trying to shoot that Wolf for almost two months after several bite incidents, for the time being without success.
This year at least 45 cubs born
There is still a wolf territory that may be counted until the fourteenth of the Netherlands. The majority of this habitat is located in Belgium, northwest of Antwerp. But the Wolvin that lives in this area sometimes comes in Southwest Brabant.
In total, at least 45 young wolves were born in the Netherlands this spring. That can be more if, for example, they are not recorded on the screen.
In total there are more than a hundred wolves in the Netherlands. It is difficult to say exactly how much there are. Because they are not always recorded on the screen, but also because wolves roam through the Netherlands who are looking for their own territory. DNA is sometimes found of those wolves (via a turd or a dead animal), but that does not always happen.
Bij12 also reports that a wolf that was found sleeping in a backyard in Doetinchem more than two years ago has settled on the southeastern part of the Veluwe. Veterinarians stunned the animal in 2023, but because it was nothing wrong with it, it was released again.
