Jorinde van Klinken finally took her first World Cup medal on Sunday after two fourth places. The Discuswerster felt that gold was possible, but she will probably celebrate the silver in a karaoke bar in Tokyo.
“Finally you see that I am not crazy,” was the first thing to say when she stood opposite a few Dutch journalists an hour after the final in the Japan National Stadium. “I knew this was possible.”
The 25-year-old Van Klinken had already said the day before that it was time for her first World Cup medal, after fourth places in 2022 and 2023. “Fourth is megagoed, certainly because I was only 22 and 23 years old. But with a fourth place you are of course never happy. I am the first Dutch woman ever to be with a World Cuprots.”
Yet the Drenthe was not euphoric. Her first attempt in the final (67.50 meters) was immediately her best, after which the American Valarie Allman took gold with a distance of 69.48 meters.
“My first throw is normally not my furthest. That confirms my feeling that there was more to it today. My distant throw did not come and that of Allman did. That takes me a lot of energy to be happy. No, I am not delighted.”
“Which song should I sing?”
Van Klinken had enjoyed the final. “For me, such a final is the best moment of the year. Everyone is here at their best and then there is nothing better than fighting each other.”
As always, Van Klinken had selected special socks for the final. Afterwards she showed them to the media. “It says Girl Power . I needed that. For important competitions I always look for some suitable text. Girl Power fits a day like today.”
The day after the Silver Final was not nearly over for Van Klinken. And not for Alida van Daalen, the other Dutch woman in the final battle. She finished eleventh.
“We go into town together. Alida wants to go to the McDonald’s, but I don’t know if there is much to get there for me. I’m vegan. I also want to go to the Karaokebar.” Laughing: “Do you have a suggestion which song I should sing?”
‘Within the team we are best friends’
That Van Klinken together with Van Daalen was in the final and celebrates the silver together means a lot to her. “Within the team we are best friends. We share a room together here. Alida has also contributed to this medal. She has experienced the way to this medal from close by.”
Van Klinken’s thoughts went much further back. “I think it was in 2013 that we were with a group of about seven juniors at a national training at Papendal. Jessica painter (European shot put, ed.) Was there. And Benthe König, who also once stood on a World Cup. Bizar what that group of then has done in the past.”
Van Klinken is grateful. “Those young athletes from that time lifted each other to a higher level. It is so nice if you can throw someone at a training. And together you can experience what is involved in top sport. That has all had influence on the way to this silver.”
