Two men were saved from a tree in the Biesbosch in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. The pair was in the nature reserve to photograph when suddenly the water rose rapidly.
“The water can quickly rise to 1 meter,” a spokesperson for the Zeeland-West-Brabant police told NU.nl.
Because it was dark, the men panicked and climbed into a tree to bring themselves to safety. Around 1.30 am, emergency services from Werkendam, Hank, Gorinchem and Dordrecht were called up for the rescue operation. Firefighters went into the nature reserve on foot and with boats. Divers were also used to locate the men.
After a search of about an hour, the fire brigade found the men and brought them to safety. They were checked by ambulance personnel, after which they could drive their own car to the GP station. Both men have suffered minor injuries.
