Dutch F-35 jet hunters helped down Russian drones that flew through the Polish airspace in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. EU-BuitenlandChef Kaja Kallas says there are indications that the Russian action was intentional.
Polish, Dutch and NATO beam hunters came into action when Russian drones and rockets to Ukraine repeatedly entered the Polish airspace. In addition, some drones were brought down. There were no injuries.
The Polish army thanks on X the Dutch Air Force and the Air Force of NATO for the deployment of F-35 beam hunters. “Thank you for helping to guarantee safety in the Polish airspace.”
EU-BuitenlandChef Kaja Kallas says there are indications that there was intent and not an accident in the Russian action. A source within NATO tells Reuters news agency that the alliance sees instructions that Russia intentionally did this. NATO would not see the promotion as an attack.
Kallas emphasizes that the EU is behind Poland. She states on X that “Russia’s war escalates and does not end”. She argues for more measures against Russia, more support for Ukraine and investments in European defense.
‘Moscow is looking for the boundaries’
The Polish government held an emergency consultation on state security on Wednesday morning. Prime Minister Donald Tusk also says he is in close contact with NATO chef Mark Rutte.
Poland is ready to respond to any attacks or provocations, Tusk said. “We are dealing with a large -scale provocation … We are ready to ward off such provocations. The situation is serious and nobody doubts that we have to prepare for different scenarios.”
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zenskywad claims that a total of eight drones have violated Polish airspace. According to the president, it is about Russian -Iranian Shahed drones. These are unmanned drones that are meant to attack goals on the ground.
“Moscow is constantly looking for boundaries,” says Zensky on X. “This creates an extremely dangerous precedent for Europe. The Russians must feel the consequences. Russia must realize that the war cannot be expanded and must be terminated.”
Several airports in Poland were closed due to “military activities”. Most airports were open again around 8 a.m. Only the Lublin airport is still closed.
There is still a search for wreckage of drones. The police say they have found a damaged drone in the eastern border area Lublin. Polish citizens are asked to leave drones and not touch them because of possibly hazardous substances.
