The Film Revolves Around the Couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy Rose (Colman), Who Slowly See Their Idyllic Family Life in the United States Turn Into A Bitter Struggle With Each Other. The Roses is based on the book the war of the roses and the film classic of the same name from 1989 by Danny Devito.
“I HONESTLY ALREADY LOVED THE FIRST FILM,” Says director Jay Roach ( Austin Powers , Meet the Parents ). “The humor was so dark and crazy. But I think our version is really different because it’s not just just about ‘the war’ between the roses. It’s also who is they before that. The Story and the Characters are actuple -diffy differenter.”
The War of the Roses is about an American Couple (Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner) who refuse to give up their luxury home after a breakup. The Roses is about a British Couple trying to build a good life in the United States.
‘We had to be completely Reinvent the characters’
In The Roses , Theo is a successful architect. Ivy Takes Care of the Children and Runs A Poorly Performing Shellfish Restaurant with the Counts Name We’ve Got Crabs! . When His Career Falls Apart And Her Restaurant Suddenly Flourishes, The Roles Within The Family Become Completely Different.
What follows is an explosive battle in which jealousy prevails. Theo and Ivy Both Don’t want to give up the house, so they literally try to chase each other out of the house: with fire, destruction, and equal poisoning. Other Roles in the film are played by Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Ncuti Gatwa.
“I was Given Complete Freedom to Rewrite the Story About the Roses,” Says Screenwriter Tony McNamara ( The Favourite , Cruella ). “It Didn’t Really Feel Like We Were Making a Remake At All. We had to complete Reinvent the Story and the Characters, Just Like With Any Other Film. And of Course, Think About How We Could Make It Funny In A Way That Fits This Time.”
They succeeded, when the camera was rolling. “People like Andy and Kate Don’t just to try to be funny,” McNamara Says Laughing. “They also improvised parts, but at the same time were very respectful of the script. We worked together a lot to make the mariaage of the main characters as interesting as possible.”
‘I Almost Never Get To Do Anything with Guns’
Yet it was Sometimes Difficult for the cast to stay serious duration filming. “For Example, Benedict and Olivia had to do Hilarous Things Duration the Scene of the Big Dinner Party (Where Nothing On The Table Survives and the Food Scraps Fly Through The Air, Ed.) “But everyone on the set was in stitches.”
Neverberness, Cumberbatch and Colman Thoroughly Enjoyed the Physical Chaos. “Earlier in the film, it was Mostly Arguing with Words. Throwing Things was so great to do,” Says Cumberbatch. “I Almost Never Get To Do Anything with Guns,” Colman Adds Enthusiastically. “I REAXLY ENJOYED IT.”
Despite all the slapstick and absurdity, accordance to the makers, there is also a serious undertone in the roses . “I naturally hope that people think after seeing the film:” Wow, I had the best time of my life, “” Says McNamara. “But I also hope they think:” Maybe I should be a little nicer to my partner. “
Director Roach Agrees: “I hope people have laughed, but maybe have learned something and don’t because to make the same mistakes as the main characters.”
