Washed -up dwarf fin fish of 6 meters seems saved after special operation in Belgium

In the Belgian seaside resort of Heist, a washed -up dwarf fin fish was accompanied back to the sea. The animal, which weighs a few thousand kilos, has always pushed into the sea after three times. It is not entirely certain whether it has been successful.

According to Kelle Moreau of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (KBIN), the rescue campaign is exceptional. “We have never experienced anything like that in thirty years,” he tells VRT NWS .

The rescue operation began after the dwarf fin fish ended up in shallow water and later on the beach. Presumably that was due to navigation errors. Redners discovered the animal on Sunday morning. They immediately started a complex operation to keep the dwarf fin fish wet and to have it safely return to deeper waters.

To save the whale, a temporary ‘swimming pool construction’ on the beach was created with towels and buckets of water. Then a bulldozer dug a trench towards the sea. A plastic sail was placed under the animal, after which fifteen people carefully accompanied the whale to the water.

The team managed to get the dwarf fin fish into the sea twice, but the animal kept rinse again. After a final rescue attempt on Sunday evening, the animal seemed to be safely swimming into the sea. It is still unclear whether it survived the night.

‘Hopefully only lost your way’

According to a veterinarian, the dwarf fin fish was physically healthy, but this could only be assessed superficially. “The hope is that the vinvis has only ended up here by a navigation error and emerging sandbanks,” says Moreau.

The rescue operation attracted many curious people to Heist’s beach. Despite all the efforts, it remains exciting whether the vinvis has fully recovered. “Now waiting for further news, or rather: no news,” says Moreau.
