Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinatra has been put out of office because of an inappropriate phone call with the former Cambodian leader their sen. The Constitutional Court ruled on Friday that Shinatra has violated the ethical standards of the premiership.
The leaked phone call took place earlier this summer, when the tensions were running between Thailand and Cambodia. Shinatra called their sen during the conversation “Uncle” and promised to meet the wishes of the former Prime Minister, who is now chairman of the Cambodian Senate.
Shinatra would also have spoken about the Thai army in a derogatory way. In the conversation with their sen, she said about a high -ranking Thai commander that he “just wants to look cool”. Opponents thought that the statements went way too far, since their sen is an important politician in a country with which Thailand was in conflict at that time.
The prime minister defended himself by stating that the telephone conversation was a “negotiating tactics”. She also said that in the future she would never call their sen again.
As a result of the leaked conversation, dozens of parliamentarians signed a petition to put Shinatra out of her office. According to them, the Prime Minister has violated ethical standards. The Constitutional Court now goes along with that.
