A homosexual asylum seeker was mistreated last week because of his orientation by roommates of the asylum seekers’ center in Budel. A group of men have beaten him several times.
Interest association LGBT Asylum Support reports the mistreatment in a letter addressed to outgoing minister David van Weel (asylum and migration). The victim would have reported the abuse.
The man ran a bloody face during the abuse. During the mistreatment, the perpetrators shouted that the victim looked “like a gay”. The abused man only stayed in the asylum seekers’ center in Budel for a month.
The police said she is investigating the abuse and that she hopes to find out who the perpetrators are. No one has yet been arrested. The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), which is responsible for the asylum seekers’ center, does not respond to individual cases, says a spokesperson.
LGBT Asylum Support shares the incident because, according to the organization, the COA does not regularly act fast enough after incidents about queer asylum seekers. For example, a lesbian couple would have reported a threat last month because of their orientation, but only moved to another center after three weeks.
In the meantime, there were incidents again. That is why the women would have been advised not to walk hand in hand or to wear accessories with rainbow colors.
Advice went against COA guideline
In this case, the spokesperson for the COA cannot comment on the specific situation. She says that such advice is not according to the guidelines of the organization. “COA employees are trained to de-escalate in the event of conflicts and to take limiting measures where necessary.”
“Addressing residents on wearing rainbow accessories does not fit our vision. If this does happen from a good intention in the context of safety, then employees are addressed.”
