Three quarters of killed women killed by (former) partner or family member

Almost three-quarters of the Women who died in the Netherlands in the past five years as a result of Murder or Manslaughter Were Killed by A (former) Partner or Family Member. The Victims were most or killed in their own homes.

In 2024, 120 People Were Killed in The Netherlands: 76 Men and 44 Women, Accordance to Figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). That was Five Fewer than the year before and Almost Half as many as at the beginning of this century.

From 2020 to 2024, The Police had a suspect in sight in 97 percent of all female Victims. More than Half of Those Women Were Killed by Their (former) partner. For Women Between the Ages of Twenty and Sixty, That Share was Almost Two-Thirds. One in Five Women was Killed by a Family Member.

In The Remaining Cases, The Perpetrator was An Acquaintance of the Victim (Almost 16 percent), The Perpetrator had No Direct Connection with the Victim (6.5 percent), or the identity of the perpetrator was Unknown (More than 5 percent).

Female Victims were most or killed in their own homes. In most cases, they were killed with a stabbing weapon or by strangulation.

FEWER AND FEWER MURDERS AND MANSSLUGHTERS IN THE NETHERLANDS

They were killed in more than a third of the cases by someone they knew. In more than 15 percent of the cases, there was no connection between the perpetrator and the victim.

Around the turn of the century, an average of 163 men and 74 women were killed each year. Since 2016, The Average Has Been 82 Men and 43 Women per year. The Average Number of Men Killed Has Therefore Halved Since the Beginning of the Century, And The Number of Women Killed Has also Fallen.

Half or All Murders in Municipalities with More than 100,000 Inhabitants. Last year, the most victims were registered in The Three Largest Cities in The Netherlands: Amsterdam (18), Rotterdam (11) and The Hague (8). In 2022 and 2023, Rotterdam was The City with the most Murders.

In the past Five Years, Thirty Children Under The Age of Ten Have Been Killed. In 26 or thesis cases, at Least one of the child’s own parents turned out to be the perpetrator.
