Athletes are struggling for World Championship with a case of sex movie: 'Rather not talk about it'

Three weeks before the World Cup athletics, a case of cross -border behavior from 2023 remains above the team. Athletes are struggling with the case. “The Athletics Union has not taken this seriously enough.”

Lieke Klaver has to think carefully about what she is going to say. “I find it really difficult to talk about this,” she replies after twelve seconds of silence. Around her is a dozen journalists during the press moment of the Dutch athletics team at Topsportcentrum Papendal.

The subject is the issue of Zoë Sedney. “This still plays a bit within the team,” Klaver acknowledges. “But I’d rather wait for the authorities that should do that, come to a conclusion. Only then I want to talk about it.”

On Monday, Klaver is not the only Dutch athlete who finds it difficult to say something about the interview that Sedney recently gave in Runner’s World and the response from the Athletics Union. “I would rather not talk about it today. This is now about the World Cup,” says Femke Bol.

Kogelstoter Jessica Schilder says that she does not know the details and that she is difficult to form an opinion. “But it is a very annoying situation. It seizes me as a person. We also talk about it.”

Sedney told her story for the first time this month

The Sedney case has long been playing within the Dutch Athletics Topp. It is two years since the now 23-year-old horde and relay player had sex with a teammate. He filmed that without her permission and possibly spread the images within the team.

The male athlete in question was temporarily banned from Topsportcentrum Papendal, but was allowed to return well before the Paris Olympic Games. In the meantime, Sedney was depressed at home.

In later publications in the media, the image emerged that the athletics union had chosen the sporting performance over the well -being of Sedney. And Sedney had that feeling too. “There has been no open and honest conversation,” she told Runner’s World at the beginning of this month. “Nothing had taken place that gave me the impression that he was working on himself and had learned from the situation. I could not start training with him again.”

A week after the interview with Sedney, Pieke de Zwart, general manager of the Athletics Union, came up with a response. He said in an interview with the AD and De Telegraaf that no evidence had been found that the secretly recorded video of Sedney was distributed.

Moreover, according to De Zwart, the athletics union could not do much. “How long should we punish him? We are not even authorized to sanction. We have no employment law relationship with athletes.”

Van Klinken therefore gives her opinion about the actions and words of the athletics union for fifteen minutes, which, according to her, are more than insufficient. “I think the union has changed a lot due to external pressure, and not because they really wanted it herself. I am afraid it will take a long time before it is really safe.”

A few minutes later, the Sedney issue is also the subject of conversation with national coach Laurent Meuwly, who is in charge of the training group with the male athlete and previously also Sedney. The Swiss is especially surprised that he still has to answer questions about it.

“It’s a long time ago,” says Meuwly. “This chapter should have been closed for a long time. I don’t see why it should be talking about again. Everyone has drawn their conclusions.”

Meuwly realizes that he was perhaps closest to both Sedney and the male athlete of everyone within the union. He thinks he – within his power – has done everything to handle the case properly. “And I think Zoë says so when you ask her.”

Meuwly fights that he or the athletics union made the sporting interest heavier than the well -being of Sedney. “We couldn’t know that far before the Games that he would win Olympic gold there. That is talking afterwards.”

Sedney sees it differently. “He was needed for the Games,” she said early this month. Meuwly understands her feelings. “She has the right to be frustrated. As a Bond, we also have to learn about how there is communication, inwards and out. But we also have to continue.”
