In more and more municipalities, new parents have been able to request a baby vegetable bag since this week. The special package must introduce babies to healthy eating early. Not only the babies benefit from it, but also their parents.
Cook allergies, food from a game or eating yourself: as a new parent you have a lot of work on baby food. To help with that, you can request the vegetable bag in some neighborhoods of Rotterdam from this week. With that, the Baby Vegetable Bags Foundation wants to relieve parents. In the meantime, the organization works together with sixteen different municipalities of which it receives a subsidy, including The Hague, Apeldoorn and now also Rotterdam.
Parents want their baby to get the best and healthiest food. But according to Floor Volker, director of the foundation, they are often uncertain about how that should be. “This is especially the case with the first child,” she explains to Nu.nl. “They have a pattern for their own food, but you can’t give what you eat yourself to your child.” By doing research, Volker has figured out how she can cook families fresh and healthy more often.
There are fourteen different vegetables in the bag. You get two types of vegetables every week for eight weeks. You can also request a hand blender to puree the vegetables. “They are not sprouts or cabbage, but organic parsnip and fennel,” says Volker. Not the best known vegetables, but they provide a lot of variation.
And that is important for the development of babies. They still have to get used to all those new flavors. Starting early with eating vegetables ensures that children still like vegetables at a later age. All that healthy food again reduces the chance of diseases. “Parents also eat new things themselves and continue to cook fresh for the whole family for longer,” says Volker.
The bag is for all parents who want to request him, regardless of their income. In The Hague, more than eleven hundred families from the Laak, Escamp districts and partly received the bags in the center. “I get phone calls from all kinds of parents, high and low educated, from different cultures,” says Volker. “They all have the same question: how do I best feed my baby?”
