Lieke Klaver refueled on Wednesday on her 27th birthday towards the World Cup Athletics in Japan. In the pouring rain, the Dutch recorded the second time in the 400 meters in the Diamond League match in Lausanne, Switzerland.
After a quick start, Klaver seemed to be on her way to the victory, but in the last meters she was overtaken by the Norwegian Henriette Jaeger. With a time of 50.17 seconds, she remained only six hundredths above her best season time, which she walked in Budapest more than a week ago.
Klaver had to defy heavy weather conditions in Lausanne. Before and during her competition it rained a lot in the Swiss city, making the athletics track in the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise pretty wet.
Klaver hopes for the first time to win an individual medal at a global outdoor event at the World Cup Athletics in Tokyo (13-21 September). In 2023 she became world champion on the 4×400 meters and was mixed Olympic champion on the 4×400 meters.
In preparation for the World Cup, Klaver takes part in the Diamond League match in Brussels (Friday) and the Diamond League final in Zurich (27 and 28 August). Femke Bol is also present at the last game. The 400 meters hurdles was not on the program in Lausanne and Bol skips the competition in Brussels.
Later on Wednesday, Nadine Visser comes into action in the 100 meter hurdles.
