Now+ basketball player Edwards suddenly had to leave at NBA club: ‘Heavy Shit’

Jesse Edwards

Jesse Edwards now also knows how hard the world of the NBA can be. A few months after his debut in the largest basketball competition in the world, Minnesota Timberwolves dissolved his contract. The Dutchman wants to return to the NBA via Australia.

He also laughs at his schedule for the next 72 hours. On Wednesday evening, Edwards will play a World Cup qualifying match against Bulgaria with the Dutch team in Almere, on Thursday he will marry his girlfriend and Friday the brand new wedding couple will board the plane to Melbourne.

“When I hear myself say it, it doesn’t make sense at all,” says 25-year-old Edwards in conversation with NU.nl. “In a few years there will probably be a moment when I have a moment of peace and think: that was a lot. Oh, they are all fun things.”

Welcome to the world of a professional basketball player who is against the NBA. In March, Edwards made his debut in the North American top competition in March. Three months later he signed a new, one -year contract with Minnesota Timberwolves. But that commitment was torn by the club without detours after a few weeks.

Edwards knew it could happen. He had a so-called ‘two-way contract’, a non-full commitment, which could be canceled at any time until January. “The club has never really given me a concrete reason,” says the Amsterdammer. “Of course it was a blow and it felt heavy shit, because I had built something in Minnesota. But this was the risk when I signed.”

The rules for contracts in the NBA cannot be compared with those in the European top football. Certainly young players like Edwards have little control over their fate. The Dutchman had to hope that one of his competitors would leave his position (center) from Minnesota. But the Timberwolves attracted two younger tall men.

“I knew in advance that there was a chance that I could make few minutes in the NBA again,” says Edwards. “But not to renew my contract with the Timberwolves, was something like that.”

After the bad news from Minnesota, Edwards’ agent Joe Smith immediately went to work. Several clubs showed interest, also from the NBA. “There were a few options to get on a test and thus earn a ‘two-way contract’,” says Edwards. “But then I would have been in the same situation again as in Minnesota.”

The basketball player decided that he wants to play a lot in the coming season. Even though it means that he has to leave the United States. “That was not an easy decision, because I have been living in America for seven years. But I want to make a lot of minutes at a high level now.”

Barely a week after his forced departure at the Timberwolves, Edwards had a new club, on the other side of the world. Melbourne United proudly announced that the Amsterdammer signed for a year. “I really believe that Jesse is an NBA player,” said coach Dean Vickerman.

The six-time champion of the National Basketball League (NBL), the professional competition of Australia and New Zealand, made it clear to want Edwards from the start.

“I don’t see this step as a farewell to the NBA,” says Edwards. “It is a different route with the same goal: returning to the NBA.”

But first this week, with an international match, a small -scale wedding and a long flight to his new hometown. “My girlfriend and I want to get married for a long time,” says Edwards. “The fact that it happens so quickly in between is also because it helps with the Visa for Australia. We will do the real party later. If it is less a crazy house.”
