45 Ukrainian refugees received elsewhere after a fire in reception center

Dozens of Ukrainian refugees cannot go back to their reception location in Swolgen in North Limburg. The shelter is damaged for a nightly fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown. The Ukrainians are taken care of in the region.

The fire broke out around 2.10 a.m. in the daycare location on Jan van Swolgenstraat in the night from Monday to Tuesday. The fire mainly damaged the back of the building, but nobody was injured. The refugees had to leave the shelter.

The 45 residents were initially taken care of at a campsite nearby. Later they were able to go to two other reception locations. For privacy reasons, the municipality cannot tell where they are now, a spokesperson for the municipality of Horst aan de Maas reports to L1 News .

It is still unclear whether the Ukrainians can return to the daycare in Swolgen. The fire brigade and police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

According to the planning, the daycare will close its doors as of January 1, 2026. The municipality is currently investigating whether it can still open a crisis relief.
