Fans of the Israeli club Maccabi Haifa caused a lot of fuss in Poland on Thursday with a banner around the Conference League match against the Polish Raków Czestochowa. Even the president of the country spoke out.
During the competition, fans of Maccabi Haifa showed a banner in the front rows with “murderers since 1939”. It was a reference to the Second World War, in which Poland was occupied by Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945.
Almost the entire Jewish population in Poland was murdered, many of which are in German destruction camps. At the outbreak of the war, Poland with 3.2 million Jews had the largest Jewish population in Europe. Another 3 million non-Jewish Poles died during the occupation.
Yet there are large disagreements between Israel and Poland. Studies have shown that some Poles were involved in killing Jews. Poland has always rejected those accusations.
For safety reasons, the game was not played in Poland, but in Debrecen, Hungarian. That could not prevent the banner. Polish President Karol Nawrocki was furious. “This scandalous banner insults the memory of Polish citizens and victims of the Second World War,” he writes on X.
The Israeli embassy in Warsaw also condemned the action. “There is no room for such words and acts, from whatever side, in the stadium nor somewhere else. Never! This does not reflect the majority of Israeli fans.”
