We are writing a new editorial status. That means we are talking a lot about our identity this summer. What is our main task? Editor -in -chief Lindsay Mossink tells you more about it.
For years, four words have been on the wall of our editorial floor: factual, well -arranged, open and fast. I think that wall can use a lick of paint. We are still all that, but we are also taking an extra step.
We also want to be sharp. Sharp on framing, lies, factual inaccuracies, misinformation and spider. Our work should never contribute to our own gain, political or business opportunism. With that you simply pollute the public debate.
You saw that approach again this week around an image that PVV leader Geert Wilders shared. On X he posted a picture with two half faces. On the left was a young blonde woman with blue eyes, with “PVV” underneath. On the right an older woman with an angry look and a headscarf. Below that were the letters “PvdA”. At De Post Wilders wrote: “To you the choice on 29/10”, referring to the parliamentary elections.
The national reporting point for discrimination received thousands of reports. A provocation of Wilders, with a racist image. At such a moment we have to pay extra attention. That is why you did not read a bare news item on NU.nl, but immediately this indicated story:
The question arose: should we show the image in that story? No, was our conclusion. After all, we carefully choose our own words, the chief of our political editors Thomas Moerman judged. While such an image would lead a life of its own. And with that we help Wilders not only dominate the debate, you give an image that also sows hatred.
I therefore agree with the presented expert: “Media are not a neutral hatch, they make a selection. It’s about how they pass it on and how they name it.”
