A copy of the first edition of The Hobbit from 1937 was sold at auction house Auctioneum in Bath, British for 43,000 pounds (more than 49,000 euros). That is considerably more than the expected yield of 12,000 pounds.
It is a copy from a circulation of fifteen hundred pieces. The book contains illustrations by writer JRR Tolkien himself.
According to specialist Caitlin Riley of the auction house, the book is in exceptionally good condition. “Because it is a children’s book, most of them have been touched by children’s hands and in some cases daubed with colored pencils,” says Riley. “A copy that looks completely unread and has never been used is really very rare.”
The BBC calls The Hobbit one of the most successful children’s books ever. Since the publication, more than 100 million copies have been sold worldwide. The story follows the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins during an adventure full of magic, dwarfs and a dragon that guarded a treasure.
Years later, Tolkien also wrote The Lord of the Rings , in which Bilbo’s cousin Frodo is central. Both books are filmed in several parts.
