Benfica won 0-2 against OGC Nice on Wednesday in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The Portuguese team took a step towards the play-offs, where Feyenoord may be waiting.
The 0-1 occurred shortly after halftime in the South of France. Franjo Ivanovic slid the ball in beautifully after a pass from former Feyenoord player Fredrik Aursnes.
Shortly before the final whistle, Benfica doubled the margin. Again, it was a beautiful goal. Substitute Florentino took aim from about 25 meters and hammered the ball into the corner. This 0-2 was the final score.
With this, Benfica takes a big step towards the Champions League play-offs. The return match in Lisbon is scheduled for Tuesday.
Feyenoord may be waiting in the play-offs. The Rotterdam team won the first leg against Fenerbahçe in the third qualifying round of the Champions League on Wednesday: 2-1.
Club Brugge also did well in the third qualifying round. The Belgians won 0-1 against Red Bull Salzburg. The Dutch defender Bjorn Meijer had an important role in the victory, as he provided the assist for Romeo Vermant’s winning goal.
