The Israeli cabinet will continue discussions on Thursday regarding the intention to occupy the entire Gaza Strip, according to local media. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to proceed with the plan, but some high-ranking army officers and a number of ministers are reportedly still hesitant about the plan.
On Tuesday, a special meeting was held on the situation in Gaza. In addition to Netanyahu, several ministers and high-ranking army officers were present at the consultation. Shortly thereafter, the Prime Minister’s Office reported on X that the army “is ready to implement the decisions of the security cabinet.”
The plan to take over the entire Palestinian Gaza Strip, including the areas where hostages are likely being held, has reportedly led to criticism in military circles.
For example, army leader General Eyal Zamir is against the full occupation of Gaza, according to reports from Ynet and Channel 12, among others. A full occupation would seriously endanger the surviving hostages in Gaza. It is also feared that continuous operations in Gaza will take too heavy a toll on the armed forces. The army already controls more than 80 percent of the area.
A final decision on the possible Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip is expected on Thursday. According to Channel 12, Netanyahu is determined to take Gaza. As far as the prime minister is concerned, the occupation should take precedence over the liberation of hostages, writes The Times of Israel.
