A House of Representatives committee has subpoenaed former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday in an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. The couple must make a statement about the “horrific crimes” of the sex offender.
The committee has also summoned six former Attorneys General and two former FBI directors. The hearings will begin at the end of this month and last until mid-October.
The Republican-controlled committee has also called on the Department of Justice to release documents on Epstein, including all communications between former President Joe Biden’s administration and the department on the case.
The actions of the committee make it clear that interest in the Epstein files remains high. Both Republicans and Democrats are not letting go of the subject, to the displeasure of President Donald Trump. “Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein?” he responded in July when a journalist asked questions to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Trump’s name also appears in documents related to the Epstein case. It is not entirely clear in what context his name is mentioned; in any case, it does not necessarily mean that he has done anything wrong.
Epstein died in his cell in 2019 while awaiting trial. He had been charged with sexual abuse and human trafficking.
In conspiracy theories circulating in the United States, a link is made with former President Clinton. For example, there is a conspiracy theory that Epstein was not killed by suicide, but was murdered on Clinton’s orders. This theory gained more followers when Trump retweeted a message with this claim in 2019.
Another theory concerns how Epstein acquired his wealth. “Some people speculate that he received money from high-ranking figures, such as Clinton, who wanted to get in touch with underage girls,” explained America expert Madeleijn van den Nieuwenhuizen earlier.
