Feyenoord-trainer Robin van Persie kijkt uit naar het tweeluik tegen zijn oude club Fenerbahçe in de derde voorronde van de Champions League. De oud-spits zegt dat de ploeg van coach José Mourinho uit “echte kerels” bestaat.
“Fenerbahçe is een heel goede ploeg. Ze hebben echte kerels met veel ervaring in de selectie. Het wordt een mooie test. Het is een wedstrijd waar we naar uitkijken”, zei Van Persie dinsdag op een persconferentie in De Kuip in de aanloop naar de heenwedstrijd van woensdag.
Waar Van Persie wil dat zijn ploeg vaak met aanvallend voetbal successen boekt, legt Mourinho de nadruk regelmatig op het verdedigende aspect. “Ik denkt dat we morgen gaan kijken naar twee teams die op hun eigen manier heel goed zijn”, zei Van Persie, die soms graag in het hoofd van de Portugees zou kijken.
“Ik ben altijd benieuwd wat zijn speelwijze is bij verschillende scenario’s. Dan vraag ik me af: waarom kiest hij voor dit patroon? Of voor deze speler? Zijn teams zijn vaak geoliede machines. De patronen in zijn ploegen zijn goed zichtbaar, zowel mét als zonder bal.”
Van Persie is blij dat Feyenoord dinsdag Anel Ahmedhodzic aantrok. De coach heeft goede hoop dat de verdediger woensdag speelgerechtigd is. “Hij voldoet aan heel veel voorwaarden en toont leiderschap. Ik moet hem zo nog even goed in de ogen kijken. Op basis daarvan beslis ik of hij speelt. De kans is groot dat hij speelt.”
Van Persie gaf ook meer duidelijkheid over zijn besluit om voorlopig Timon Wellenreuther op te stellen. Justin Bijlow werd vorige maand nog aangekondigd als eerste doelman, maar vorige week meldde Van Persie dat de keeper niet wedstrijdfit zou zijn.
“Je kan trainingsfit zijn en trainingen meedoen. Maar als je de stap moet zetten naar wedstrijden spelen, moet dat een aantal keer per week kunnen. Een keeper wil je namelijk niet iedere week wisselen. Dat is hoe ik het zie. Dat is het verschil tussen trainingsfit en wedstrijdfit.”
Wellenreuther, die ook op de persconferentie was, keek terug op een lastige voorbereiding, waarin hij alles heeft gegeven om zich te bewijzen. “Het was niet makkelijk. Ik heb hard gewerkt om Robin van mening te laten veranderen. Ik ben blij dat ik er weer sta. Ik ben altijd klaar om te spelen.”
Het is afwachten of Jakub Moder woensdag van de partij is bij Feyenoord. De middenvelder kampte de afgelopen tijd met een lichte blessure. “Ik hoop dat Moder erbij is”, zei Van Persie. “Het is nog niet zeker dat hij afwezig is.”
Feyenoord coach Robin van Persie is looking forward to the double encounter against his old club Fenerbahçe in the third preliminary round of the Champions League. The former striker says that coach José Mourinho’s team consists of “real guys.”
“Fenerbahçe is a very good team. They have real guys with a lot of experience in the selection. It will be a good test. It is a match we are looking forward to,” Van Persie said Tuesday at a press conference in De Kuip in the run-up to Wednesday’s first leg.
Where Van Persie wants his team to often achieve successes with attacking football, Mourinho regularly emphasizes the defensive aspect. “I think we are going to look at two teams tomorrow that are very good in their own way,” said Van Persie, who would sometimes like to look into the Portuguese’s head.
“I am always curious what his playing style is in different scenarios. Then I ask myself: why does he choose this pattern? Or this player? His teams are often well-oiled machines. The patterns in his teams are clearly visible, both with and without the ball.”
Van Persie is happy that Feyenoord signed Anel Ahmedhodzic on Tuesday. The coach has good hope that the defender will be eligible to play on Wednesday. “He meets many requirements and shows leadership. I still have to look him in the eyes. Based on that, I will decide whether he plays. There is a good chance that he will play.”
Van Persie also provided more clarity about his decision to field Timon Wellenreuther for the time being. Justin Bijlow was announced as the first goalkeeper last month, but last week Van Persie reported that the goalkeeper would not be match fit.
“You can be training fit and participate in training. But if you have to take the step to playing matches, that has to be possible a number of times a week. You don’t want to change a goalkeeper every week. That’s how I see it. That is the difference between training fit and match fit.”
Wellenreuther, who was also at the press conference, looked back on a difficult preparation in which he gave everything to prove himself. “It wasn’t easy. I worked hard to change Robin’s mind. I’m glad I’m back. I’m always ready to play.”
It remains to be seen whether Jakub Moder will be there for Feyenoord on Wednesday. The midfielder has been struggling with a minor injury lately. “I hope Moder is there,” said Van Persie. “It is not yet certain that he will be absent.”
