This week, it’s especially important to pay attention to your speed on European roads. From August 4th to 10th, a European ‘speed marathon’ will be held. During this time, extra speed controls will be implemented throughout Europe.
Earlier this year, another European ‘speed marathon’ was held from April 6th to 13th. The second week of action starts today. During the week, there is one day when speed is checked more intensively for 24 hours.
According to ANWB, Roadpol is the driving force behind the ‘speed marathon’. This is a collaboration of 29 European police forces. In addition to the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany are also participating.
“It is very difficult to pinpoint exactly where those fines are being issued,” an ANWB spokesperson told NU.nl. “But the Netherlands is not participating; we have our own speed enforcement policy. And we are not really a transit country, which is mainly what the action applies to.”
During the week of action in April earlier this year, Roadpol reported that around 150,000 speeding violations were registered within the 24 hours of intensive control. Thousands of driving licenses were reportedly revoked. About fifteen thousand officers are participating in the action.
Traffic accidents lead to 25,000 deaths in Europe every year. These accidents are usually caused by drivers speeding.
