Rescuers in Chile have found two deceased miners in a collapsed mine. This mine collapsed on Thursday after an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale. Four others are still missing.
On the day of the accident, the first death was already confirmed. On Saturday, the second body was found. Furthermore, at least nine people were injured.
There are still four miners missing. “This discovery gives us great sadness, but it also tells us that we are searching in the right place and that the strategy we have followed has led us to them,” said Andres Music, general manager of El Teniente, in a statement.
The rescue operation is still ongoing. Music indicated that the effort is being continued with “strength and hope”, but that the rescuers also have to proceed carefully. This may cause the search to proceed more slowly.
El Teniente is one of the largest copper mines in the world. The accident occurred around 5:30 PM local time on Thursday and was caused by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale. That is one of the strongest earthquakes ever measured in El Teniente.
