Lamens misses eighth finals in Montreal due to loss against global number 493

Suzan Lamens failed to reach the round of 16 of the strong WTA1000 tournament in Montreal on Thursday. The 26-year-old tennis player from Berkel en Rodenrijs lost in the third round to the Chinese Zhu Lin: 2-6 and 2-6.

In the first set, Lamens erased an early break deficit, but then surrendered her service game twice more. Zhu continued to serve well and won the set in half an hour.

The second set was almost identical to the opening set. Lamens undid an early break deficit, but was then broken twice again. Zhu decided the match after more than an hour on her first match point.

Zhu is the world number 493, but was ranked 31st in the world almost two years ago. The 31-year-old Chinese player was admitted to the main tournament in Montreal based on a protected status.

In the second round, Lamens achieved a fine victory over the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, number 21 in the world. The Dutch player participated in the tournament in Montreal for the first time.

For Lamens, the tournament in Montreal was her first event since Wimbledon. The world number 68 lost in the second round on the sacred grass in London.
