Tallon Griekspoor was Tuesday eliminated at the Masters tournament in Toronto. The Dutchman lost in two sets to Tomás Martín Etcheverry and was visibly angry with himself.
The 29-year-old Griekspoor (ATP-31) as a seeded player was allowed to skip the first round on the hardcourt in Toronto. In the second round, he faced the Argentinian Etcheverry (ATP-60), who proved to be a size too big.
Griekspoor was behind the facts from the start. He immediately handed in two service turns and lost the first set. At 4-5 in the second act, the North-Hollander survived three match points, but a little later it was ready via a tiebreak.
Griekspoor hit his racket to pieces after the decisive point. The defeat fits in the series of meager results of the past few weeks.
At the end of last month, Griekspoor won the ATP tournament of Mallorca in his name. That created expectations for Wimbledon, where he then lost in the first round without a chance of the American Jenson Brooksby.
With the exit of Griekspoor, there are no Dutch active in Toronto. At the sister tournament in Montreal, Suzan Lamens is in the second round. In it she will compete against the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.
