A Palestinian journalist who contributed to the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land has been shot dead by an Israeli settler in the West Bank. The documentary is about the consequences of the occupation of the area.
The victim is the 31-year-old Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen, co-director Yuval Abraham writes on X. Hathaleen was involved in a confrontation between settlers and Palestinians in the village of Masafer Yatta in the West Bank on Monday evening.
Footage shows an Israeli settler waving a gun and shooting several times. Hathaleen was seriously wounded in his upper body and later died of his injuries in the hospital, The Times of Israel writes. Two other Palestinians were also injured, reports the Palestinian Red Crescent.
The settler has been identified by Israeli media as Yinon Levi, who, along with three other extremist settlers, is on a sanctions list of the EU and the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump struck that list shortly after taking office earlier this year. It included people involved in serious human rights violations or terrorism. Among other things, they were given an entry ban.
Israeli police say they have arrested an Israeli man, but do not confirm that it is Levi. Israeli media report that he was arrested and released after questioning. He would have been placed under house arrest. According to the police, four Palestinians and two foreign tourists have also been arrested.
No Other Land won the Oscar for Best Documentary this year.
