Sprint phenomenon Wiebes strikes again in Tour, fullage remains out of trouble

Lorena Wiebes also won the fourth stage of the Tour de France Femmes on Tuesday. The Dutch rider, like the day before, was in a class of her own in the mass sprint. Marianne Vos retained the yellow leader’s jersey.

The 130-kilometer stage from Saumur to Poitiers was largely flat and, as expected, resulted in a mass sprint. Wiebes was effortlessly the best in it.

The 26-year-old rider from SD Worx seemed briefly boxed in, but zoomed past the competition when she accelerated. Vos was the only one who could somewhat follow Wiebes and finished second. The experienced Brabantse retained her yellow jersey.

Wiebes achieved her second stage success in this Tour. In Monday’s stage, she was also the best in the mass sprint. The Mijdrechtse green jersey wearer now has a total of five stage wins in the Tour de France to her name.

Wiebes has been the best sprinter in the women’s peloton for years. She now has 109 professional victories on her honors list. Earlier this year, the Dutchwoman won, among other things, Milan-San Remo, Gent-Wevelgem and two stages in the Giro d’Italia Women.

No worries for Vollering

Favorite for the overall victory Demi Vollering had a relatively easy day. The leader of FDJ-SUEZ had a hard fall in Monday’s stage. Shortly before the fourth stage, she decided to start anyway.

From now on, the classification riders are up to bat. Wednesday’s stage has a hilly finale. There are also climbs waiting for the riders in the stages that follow. The Tour lasts until Sunday.
