Spotify suffers a loss despite an increase in listeners and paid subscribers

The Swedish streaming service Spotify has not been able to meet experts’ expectations in the first half of 2025. Revenue increased, but high costs resulted in a net loss of 86 million euros, the company reports.

Spotify attracted more monthly listeners to the app and more users opted for a paid subscription. But the increasing number of users did not help in the end.

The company suffered a loss of 86 million euros in the second quarter, compared to a net profit of 274 million euros in the same period last year. Revenue did increase by about 10 percent to 4.2 billion euros, which was less than experts had expected.

According to the Swedish streaming service, the result was disappointing because it struggled with high personnel costs and marketing costs.

Spotify expects to attract more paid subscribers next quarter, but does think that the results will be affected by a weaker dollar. The investments in dollars will then be worth less, because you get fewer euros in the currency exchange.
