Skeleton of medieval knight found in Poland: 'Person of some reputation'

In the Polish city of Gdansk, the skeleton of a medieval knight was found this month. Gdansk Lancelot, as the skeleton has been called by locals since the discovery, was probably a person of some reputation.

According to archaeologists, the knight was between 1.68 and 1.78 meters tall. At the time of his death, Gdansk Lancelot would have been around forty years old.

Several attributes were also found at the grave. “Given the value of the chain mail armor and the value of the sword, it is plausible that this was a commander,” archaeologist Sylwia Kurzynska told the Polish Press Agency.

Two days before the discovery of the skeleton, a tombstone with an image of a knight was also found. According to archaeologists, this image suggests that it was a “person of some reputation.” To better understand the history and origin of the knight, the remains are being examined more thoroughly.

The discovery was made during large-scale archaeological work in the center of Gdansk, which has been ongoing since 2023. Remains of several churches have also been found during the work.
