Wout van Aert won the final stage of the Tour de France in a grand way on Sunday. The Belga-Lease A Bike Belgian showed the final winner Tadej Pogacar his heels.
“This is special,” said the very happy Van Aert after his stage victory. “I might only realize it when I see the images.”
Those images speak for themselves. Van Aert Losten Tour winner Pogacar on the last climb to Montmartre and soloed to the line. After years in which he was overshadowed in the classics by Mathieu van der Poel and Pogacar, Van Aert showed what he is still capable of.
“I was close to this tour a few times, but sometimes not at all,” Van Aert said. “The most difficult thing was to keep believing in it. But the people around me are that they will continue to do and I have to thank them for that.”
“Of course, Pogacar has had other weeks than me, but there are not too many people who can say that they have driven him off. I am extremely proud of this achievement.”
“This is a lot of virtue for myself,” Van Aert concluded. “I work super hard for it. It is not easy to meet the list of achievements you have. That creates expectations. You always look for that victory again and then this is pleased.”
