Kill and wounded after passenger train derails in Germany

A passenger train derailed in southern Germany on Sunday evening. According to the German press agency dpa, there are fatalities and multiple injuries. Emergency services are carrying out a rescue operation, but it is difficult to reach the scene of the accident.

The accident happened around 6:10 PM in a forest in the Biberach district, located in the state of Baden-Württemberg. This is reported by German media, including Die Welt.

Sources tell dpa that there have been fatalities and that several people have been injured. Die Welt writes that the emergency control center is talking about a “mass incident,” which means that a large number of injured people need to be cared for.

Police from Stuttgart were en route to the scene of the accident around 7:30 PM and could not yet provide further information.

Images show that the train is located in a difficult-to-reach forest area. Several wagons have derailed and are on their side. Emergency services are on site searching for passengers. Screaming is also said to be heard.

The cause of the derailment is not yet known.
