De Ridder wants title fight in UFC after a new victory: 'But first to the beach'

Reinier de Ridder believes he is ready for a title fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after his latest victory on Saturday. But first, the 34-year-old Dutchman wants to take a break after his breakthrough year.

De Ridder fought in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, headlining a UFC gala for the first time. He defeated Robert Whittaker, the former champion in the 84-kilogram class.

The jury declared the ‘Dutch Knight’ the winner after five rounds in the sold-out Etihad Arena. Whittaker was the better boxer in the octagon, but De Ridder tried to wear down his opponent in a ground fight.

“I had hoped to defeat him in the first round,” the former judoka said shortly after his victory. “He was so strong. It wasn’t easy for me. But after this victory, I want more.”

De Ridder signed with the UFC ten months ago. He then convincingly won against Gerald Meerschaert, Kevin Holland, and the talented Bo Nickal. After his victory over Whittaker, the Brabander is considering a fight for the title in the 84-kilogram class.

On August 16, champion Dricus du Plessis from South Africa and the Russian Khamzat Chimaev will fight for the middleweight championship belt. De Ridder hopes to challenge the winner of that duel.

“What a year I’ve had. I really need time to process everything,” De Ridder said. “I want to lie on the beach for thirty days, barbecue, be with my children, and do nothing for a while. After that, I also want to defeat Dricus and Khamzat.”
