Dirk van Duijvenbode was eliminated in the second round of the World Matchplay on Wednesday. The Dutch darts player lost to Andrew Gilding with clear numbers (5-11).
Van Duijvenbode quickly faced a 0-5 deficit in Blackpool. The South Hollander then started playing a little better and came to 5-8, but Gilding was simply a size too big.
Ultimately, Van Duijvenbode recorded an average of 93.78 points per three darts. That contrasted sharply with Gilding’s 100.50 points, who was also a class better in finishing.
Van Duijvenbode had qualified for the second round with a fine victory over Rob Cross. Gilding will face the winner of the match between Jermaine Wattimena and Luke Littler in the quarterfinals, which is scheduled for later in the evening.
Michael van Gerwen will also be in action on Wednesday evening in the second round. The Brabander meets Josh Rock. Van Gerwen defeated Raymond van Barneveld in the first round.
The World Matchplay is one of the most important tournaments on the darts calendar. It is also called the ‘summer World Cup’.
