Van Veen beats Noppert in a Dutch gathering on World Matchplay

Gian van Veen has qualified for the quarterfinals of the World Matchplay on Tuesday. He was far too strong for Danny Noppert (11-5) in a Dutch clash in Blackpool, England.

The 23-year-old Van Veen once again showed his good form with the victory over Noppert. In the first round of the World Matchplay, he stunned against top seed Luke Humphries. He won 10-8 against the 2024 world champion, who is the defending champion in Blackpool.

Wessel Nijman lost in the second round to the experienced James Wade (5-11). In the first round, he achieved a fine victory over eighth-seeded Nathan Aspinall (10-6) from England, but was unable to follow it up.

Michael van Gerwen, Dirk van Duijvenbode and Jermaine Wattimena will play on Wednesday evening for a place in the quarterfinals.

The World Matchplay is known as one of the most prestigious darts tournaments in the world. The only Dutchman to have won the tournament is Michael van Gerwen.

The player from Brabant, who defeated Raymond van Barneveld on Monday, was the strongest in 2015, 2016 and 2022. Last year, Van Gerwen was a losing finalist.
