The Canadian company Central European Petroleum (CEP) says it has discovered a large oil and natural gas field in the Baltic Sea, 6 kilometers off the Polish coast. According to the Canadians, it is one of the largest European oil discoveries in years.
The discoverers estimate that the field contains 200 million barrels of crude oil and natural gas. It concerns the offshore oil field Wolin East, which is located near the Polish port city of Swinoujscie.
CEP describes the find as “one of the largest oil discoveries in Europe in the past decade.” Extraction could begin in three to four years.
“If this discovery is ultimately confirmed, the Wolin East field could become the largest oil and natural gas field discovered in Poland to date,” says Polish State Secretary and Chief Geologist Krzysztof Galos. “The future development of this site could significantly contribute to strengthening Poland’s energy security.”
