The KNMI has issued a code yellow warning for the entire Netherlands for the upcoming Sunday. In the afternoon and evening, severe thunderstorms will move from the southwest to the northeast of the country.
The KNMI writes that the heavy thunderstorms in some places can cause flooding. Branches can also break off “due to a temporarily rapidly increasing wind.”
The showers may be accompanied by gusts of wind of 60 kilometers per hour. Hail may also fall. In some places, 30 millimeters of rain can fall within an hour.
Code yellow due to showers is issued if there is a chance of nuisance and damage around and in the house, such as flooding of cellars and gardens.
Road traffic may also experience inconvenience. Due to the heavy rainfall, water can remain on the road surface. This creates a risk of aquaplaning. This means that the tires lose contact with the road surface, making the vehicle uncontrollable.
