Antwan Tolhoek was suspended for four years by the international cycling union UCI on Wednesday for doping use. The Dutchman tested positive for the use of anabolic androgenic steroids in an out-of-competition control.
Tolhoek tested positive for the steroids, which are on the prohibited list of the international doping agency WADA, on November 27, 2023. He had already been provisionally suspended since February 7, 2024, based on the doping regulations.
The suspension of the 31-year-old Tolhoek has been applied retroactively. He is therefore suspended until February 6, 2028.
Tolhoek won a stage in the Tour de Suisse in 2019, but did not achieve any more stage victories afterwards. He participated four times in a grand tour: the Vuelta a EspaƱa (2017), the Tour de France (2018), and the Giro d’Italia (2019 and 2020).
In 2023, Tolhoek moved to the small Portuguese team Sabgal-Anicolor. His contract with that team was immediately terminated after the provisional doping suspension. He previously rode for Roompot-Oranje Peloton, Jumbo-Visma, and Lidl-Trek.
